Dara Kong (b. 1990, Prey Veng) works across media, currently with a focus on drawing. He took art classes at Sa Sa Art Projects, where he also works as technical coordinator. Dara has undertaken several residencies including San Art Laboratory, Ho Chi Minh City (2015-16); Pisaot residency at Sa Sa Art Projects, Phnom Penh (2013); Tentacles Art Space, Bangkok and Ratchaburi (2015); and Sangker Art Space & Gallery, Battambang (2015). His group exhibitions include Poetic Topographies , SA SA BASSAC, Phnom Penh (2016); Rainbow Life, The Mansion , Phnom Penh (2015); The White Building and The City , The Carol Shen Gallery, New York (2013); and Cambodian Youth Art Festival’s Snit Snaal , Sa Sa Art Projects, Phnom Penh (2012). His solo exhibitions include Open Mind , Strange Fruit, Phnom Penh (2015). Dara has also assisted in organizing many exhibition projects in Phnom Penh.

    CO – TEMPORARY #2 we invited Dara Kong to live,  work and network in Taipei for the CO—TEMPORARY: Southeast Asia - Taiwan Forum and Exchange Program on Arts and Culture program. Dara Kong was also invited to represent Sa Sa Art Projectsas the speakers for a discussion forum from 9 to 10 July 2016.

    We invite six essential art spaces from Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, which includes artist residency organizations, galleries and artist-based spaces. The common issue is that how the conditions of different countries, religious, culture, economy and geography influence the ecosystem of art.

    Kong Dara Open Studio

    Kong Dara’s residency project at OCAC is centred around the themes of queer lives. He continues to develop and create a personalised Taipei City map, structuring around his own experience as a gay person from Cambodia. He sketch out his complex experiences, emotions, and memories through pen, in order to find his personal and individual art perspective.

    The Girl from Cambodi

    Looking into the lives of queer partners, Kong Dara continued his research from his artwork at Ho Chi Minh City to Taipei while he is in residence in OCAC. His residency artwork is centred around the field research on queer lives. As a gay person from Cambodia, he tried to understand partner relationships for gay and lesbian people in Taipei.
